I know how you must feel. I was in high school just as the war ended. It was a terrible time and it was a terrible, self absorbed, self right people. A time that I was personally ashamed of being part of. Even though I never disrespected our soldiers or even thought of them with anything but respect and admiration I did see how others did. I have two sons who serve. In fact my son was nearly killed 2 days before James and he is from the same small town.
I have said this before that although the war in Vietnam did not appear on the surface to have accomplished anything I believe in the bigger since it did. We "you" stood against a radical expansion of communism around the world. It's ideology and fierce push to make it world dominant. I was men like you who saved the world from another oppressive, repressive evil. You and your brothers beat back those forces all around the world and due to America's rentlentless persistance gutted communism. Evil ideologies will never go away but as long as men like you and James and my two boys rise up and fight against them they will not prevail! God Bless you Sailor!

Too bad, a nice, bright young man, killed for an agenda sponsored by the 636 billion dollar political/military industrial complex. Killed like many of the soldiers/causalities I cared for resulting from the Viet Nam Conflict. Killed like many of my friends. You can focus all you want on the bravery details but 20 years from no one will care about Afghanistan, or Iraq. Only the Layton's parent's broken heavy hearts will bear the weight of this needless loss. It is time for change; it is late but it is time for change.

I know James R. Layton’s family and had the pleasure of meeting him a long time ago. My heart is filled with sorrow and pain. I am thankful to all of the sailor’s that serve our country and continue to fight for our freedom everyday. There are no words to describe my gratitude.

hello......my name is javier rodriguez and i went to corpsschool with layton and even though i wasnt as close to him as rosa i also knew him....thank you layton for giving your life for your family and the families of those marines that you died saving.......im not sure what to say other than i love you man...thank you for everything...one of our brother died but dont worry the rest of class 100 will always remember you and honor you by doing what you died doing..thank you

My name is HN Todd McCowan. Layton and I went to Corps School together. He was a great friend and such a fun guy to be around. I have no doubt in my mind that he did all he could to save those Marines he was protecting, so much so that he gave up his life for them. He will be missed and loved by friends and family. I pray for this brave hero's family and friends to keep the strength to go on. There will surely be days you don't want to, but remember the valor with which James served and let it act as your pulley. God bless James and lay His healing hand upon those of us that are left behind for now. My deepest sympathies are with all who cared for him.

I'm in Iraq right now, and only just now got the news about James... I had read an article about four Marines whose artillery support was denied on MSN News last week, and I remember how angry I was.

The other day, I decided to pick up a Marine Times at the PX, and to my shock and deep regret, I read that James had been identified as KIA.

James and I attended Corps School together, and we became great friends during our short time together. I remember the crazy antics we used to get ourselves into, and at least two occasions when James really saved my ass.

He was such a great guy, full of charisma--an ideal Corpsman who had both grit and "bedside manner." My deepest condolences go out to the Layton family, and please know that I am thinking of you.

He was laways a funny guy and I will remember him like that. Always smiling and making jokes. Very interesting conversations we had when we were roommates. Good guy to talk to. He was a warrior and he fought like one. Great person, great friend, great Corpsman, I'm proud of him.

I am gonna miss Layton so much. Im actually in Afghanistan right now and am also with the same RCAC ETT that my good friend Layton was on. We both went to corps school, FMTB and Okinawa, Japan together. We obviously trained together for 4 months before we were split up when we arrived here. Layton was such a great person and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family in California

I did not know HM3 Layton but as a fellow Corpsman I am deeply saddened by his loss and the recent loses of our brothers in Afghanistan. Serving in the middle east myself its hard seeing so many others fall but it makes me proud to be a corpsman knowing that my brothers are serving so bravely to uphold the oath that we as corpsman have all sworn to keep. My condolence's go out to HM3 Laytons family and all the other familys of fallen Corpsman/Marines. My heart is heavy today.

Dear family and friends of HM3 Layton. You may hear many words of condolence lately, but few others really know how you feel. We too are dealing with the loss of our Corpsman and understand the grief, frustration, anger, and sadness that comes in waves that tug at your soul. We just completed the burial services for HM3 Castiglione and have learned lessons about life and loss that we will later be able to understand. Please take the time to reach out to us if to do nothing more than share the feelings that you have, or any questions that we may be able to assist with. HM3 Layton was a very good friend of mine.. We were actually in Corps school together class 100. He was swuch a good guy, he was hilarious and we so fun to hang out with... I love you Clayton... Forever you will live in our hearts as the drunken fool we loved.

My thoughts and prayers go out to HM3 James Ray Laytons family and friends. Your son helped to keep men like my son (Marine) alive. He has paid the greatest price of laying down his life for another. As the Bible says there is no greater gift that one man can give to another but to lay down ones life for another. May God be with you all.
